The Power of Gratitude

The difference between waking up with a heart full of dread and a heart full of life is practicing gratitude: it’s a simple but powerful way to remind yourself that you’re alive and there’s so much good out there waiting to be discovered.

If it feels unnatural, the good news is that it just takes practice.

Take a few moments every morning to sit with a warm cup and look out into the fresh morning sky. Choose three things to appreciate each day. One of them can be something big, like your spouse or your kids. But thing smaller for the other two. Notice the steam coming out of your cup, the rays of sun dancing on your face, the dew settled on the leaves.

Next, bring to mind a moment from the previous 24 hours. Something that happened that made you feel a strong positive emotion. Was it a stranger’s kind gesture? A smile on a childs face? Close your eyes and remember exactly how you felt in that moment. Let the joy warm you from inside out and radiate a bright warm light from within. What sounds did you hear? What smells surrounded you? How did the wind feel on your skin? Put yourself right back into that moment. Do it now.

Welcome back.

You might feel lighter now, more at ease. You might have found it difficult. Whatever the case, honor your experience and let it go. The more you practice, the easier it will be to drop into a state of bliss. This place is always waiting for you in times of darkness or frustration. The more you experience this bliss, the more you’ll pay attention during everyday life. You’ll find that you actively search for moments of joy that you can bring yourself back to tomorrow morning.
